Deceased Name: Patrick F. Scanlan, 88, Edited Paper for Brooklyn Diocese
Patrick F. Scanlan, retired managing editor of The Tablet, the publication of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn, died Sunday at the Belair Nursing Home in North Bellmore, L.I. He was 88 years old and had long been a resident of Floral Park, L.I.
Mr. Scanlan was managing editor of The Tablet from 1917 until his retirement in 1968. He wrote and spoke widely on church doctrine and policy and won an award as the outstanding Catholic layman of Brooklyn from the Brooklyn Alumni Sodality in 1938.
In October 1951, the Government of Spain presented Mr. Scanlan with the Cross of Isabella the Catholic, investing him as a knight commander.
Mr. Scanlan was born in Manhattan and grew up in Philadelphia. He graduated from St. Joseph's College in Philadelphia. Surviving are his wife, the former Mary Manning; a daughter, Marie, of Floral Park; a son, Patrick Jr., of Lansing, Mich., and a brother, Msgr. Joseph Scanlan of the Bronx.
A funeral mass will be said at 10:30 A.M. tomorrow at Our Lady of Victory Church in Floral Park. Bishop Francis J. Mugavero of the Brooklyn Diocese will preside.
