Funeral services for Steve McCann, 79, of Sidney were 10 a.m., Friday, Jan. 4, 2002, at the Lonsdale United Methodist Church in Sidney with Pastor Susan Twidwell officiating. Eulogy was by Pastor Ron Fischer. Music was provided by Pastor Susan Twidwell and Buffy Olson. Casketbearers were Chris Crane, Eric McCann, Josh McCann, Randy Lindsley, Charlie Welch and Stan Langel. Interment was in the Richland Memorial Park under the direction of Fulkerson Funeral Home of Sidney.

Steve McCann was born Oct. 31, 1922 to Steve and Ina McCann in Goldstone, Mont. He grew up with four brothers and five sisters in nearby Joplin. As a young man, Steve served in the U.S. Army Air Corp for three and one half years during World War II. He traveled through England and France. He left the service with an honorable discharge, at the conclusion of the war. After leaving the service, he tended bar in Upton, Wyo. and later worked on the oil rigs. He married Anna J. Apostol on Feb. 16, 1950 in Newcastle, Wyo. Steve continued to work in the oilfields as a rough neck and driller for True Brown in Casper, Wyo. Steve and Anna moved to Glendive in the early 1950s, when Steve became employed with Paraffin Service as a truck pusher. He worked there for 19 years. He went to work for Eiker Inc. in Glendive in the early 1970s. In 1978 Eiker expanded to Sidney and Steve and Anna moved their family. Steve continued to work in the oilfields during the oil boom. He decided to semi-retire in 1990 from D & M Oilfield Service. He continued to work as much as health would allow.

He was a member of the Methodist Church, a member of the Moose Club in Glendive, Sidney Senior Citizens and was an active Boy Scout Leader when his sons were involved with the program. He was also an umpire for Little League Baseball.

Steve moved into Sidney Health Extended Care in October of 1999. He liked to read and do crossword puzzles. When not monitoring the traffic in his hallway, Steve attended a variety of activities including bingo, music programs, story hour and intergeneration programs. He especially enjoyed the Rau School children's programs. He was always ready to play a good game of whist with the guys. He was a resident volunteer for the Helping Hands Program.

Steve died on Friday, Dec. 28, 2001, at the Sidney Health Center Extended Care Facility.

Surviving him are his wife, Anna J. McCann of Sidney; children, Ina R. Crist of Florence, C.J. McCann of DeRidder, La. Neil E. McCann of Iberia La. and JoAnn McCann of Sidney; seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and three step-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Stevie McCann; daughter-in-law, Georgie McCann; five sisters and four brothers.
