John Dial Allen Jr. was born in White Oak, Kentucky. He was the son of John Dial Allen and Perintha Elswick Allen of Kentucky. He worked in the coal mines in Cannell City, where he was a supervisor and ran the company store. Dial lived in Kentucky and Oklahoma before finally settling in California. His first wife, Ettie Jane Frisby Allen, died in 1930 In Ontario, California. Dial moved to Knight's Landing where he retired after working in the rice fields in central California for several years. After his second wife Clara died in 1961, Dial went to live with his eldest daughter, Genevie, until his death from cancer in 1965.
