He was the son of Lemuel & Lucy (Chapman) Clement.

He married Nancy Parris, 23 Dec 1852, Spartanburg County, South Carolina.

William enlisted in the Confederate States Army as a Pvt. in Hart's Company (Company A) Horse Artillery Volunteers of South Carolina.

After the Civil War this young family moved to Grainger County, Tennessee.
