He was a descendant of pioneer New Jersey families. He received his early education in Bucks County, Pa. He attended the New Jersey State School and the Stewart School of Business (Rider College).
He began his career in a small retail grocery and in 1892 entered the wholesale business of Muschert. Reeves and Company eventually becoming the President.
A few years later he entered the newspaper business as well and became interested in farming. He was President of the Trenton Times Newspaper for 35 years. His interest in agriculture was reflected in a model farm he conducted at Lawrenceville and for many years he was treasurer of the Mercer County Board of Agriculture.
He also served as director to Riverview Cemetery.
