Originally a cotton/textile businessman during the depression he retired to a remote mountain cabin of North Carolina where he set up a studio.
Much of his work is in private hands but occasionally come up for sale.
He chronicled much of his experience in living in the rural mountains in the book, "Salt O' Life." A series of short tales of people he encountered during his more than 30 years in the mountains.
He was the son of Rev. Howard Murry Dumbell and Anna Sherrod Dumbell.
In the latter years of his life he dropped the Dumbell part of his name and only went by the name Howard Murry.
He was first married to Algie Ware in 1916 in Washington, D.C. She is buried at Elmwood Cemetery in Charlotte, NC.
They had two children.
