Joan M. Splinter, 76, of 30 Bluff St., died at 10:35 a.m. Friday, April 23, 2010, at ManorCare Health Services, of complications from cancer.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 1, at St. Raphael's Cathedral, with Monsignor Wayne Ressler officiating. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Key West, Iowa. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, April 30, at Miller Funeral Home, East Dubuque, Ill., where there will be a parish scripture service at 4 p.m.

She was born on Dec. 25, 1933, in Dubuque, daughter of Earl C. and Mary C. (Nelson) Thomas. She married Robert F. "Bob" Splinter on July 18, 1970, at St. Raphael's Cathedral; he preceded her in death on Aug. 1, 1992.

Joan was employed at A. Y. McDonald Manufacturing Co. until her retirement.

She was a member of St. Raphael's Cathedral Parish, the Ladies Auxiliary of the Eagles Club and Local 263 of the Allied Molders Union.

Surviving are two sisters-in-law, Linda (Melvin) Spoerre, of Shawnee, Kan., and Sylvia Splinter, of Dubuque; three brothers-in-law, Ervin (Norma) Splinter, of Eldridge, Iowa, John "Peach" Cavanaugh, of Dubuque, and Vincent "Jiggs" Hoftender, of East Dubuque, Ill.; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews.

She also was preceded in death by her parents; her father-and mother-in-law, Ervin and Lillian (Schroeder) Splinter; and sisters and brother-in-law, Marie Hoag, Rita Cavanaugh, Modesta "Sis" Hoftender and James A. Splinter.
