Mr. Smith served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He owned and operated a ceramic business for twenty-two years in St. John, IN and retired from Heckett Engineering, a division of Harsco where he had served as superintendent. Mr. Smith had been a Village resident for 18 years and was a member of Faith Lutheran Church. He was instrumental in helping countless neighbors with "honey do lists" through a program he initiated called Homer's Homework. He was a very honest man with a big heart and will be greatly missed.
Mr. Smith is survived by his wife of 54 years, Doris Marie Mahoney Smith of Hot Springs Village; four daughters: Debbie Shingler & husband Michael of Merriville, IN, Vicki Hegyi & husband George of Cedar Lake, IN, Kathy Rydlewski & husand Jim of Valporaiso, IN and Dawna Natzke & husband Todd of Hot Springs Village; 8 grandchildren: Alicia, Kati, Heather, Holly, Matt, Ronnie, Arin and Brandin; and three great grandchildren: Faith, Hope and Ceilia; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Donna and Ed Connor of Butler, PA.
Cremation arrangements are by Caruth Village Funeral Home. Memorial service will be Saturday, August 22, 2009 10:30AM at Faith Lutheran Church with military honors following.
