In final summary of the family of Jane Carey Abel: Two daughters were born to her after the death of John Abel, namely: Elvira J. and Catharine. Elvira J. was bound out to a family by the name of Hicks, but later she lived with Oliver C. and Martha A. Moulder. Elvira J. Ables is found living with the Moulder family in the 1850 census of Orange Co. Inc. (Paoli Township)--age 13. She died ca. 1854.
Catharine Abel lived with the Hicks family and was married under the name of Hicks to David Woodward 15th August 1858 Orange County Book-C4--page 237. From the HISTORY OF ORANGE COUNTY, INDIANA, 1884, Reprint 1950, p
age 118, under a section entitled, "THE MURDER OF THE WOODWARDS": "On the 18th of June, 1866, a bloody murder occurred in the western part of the county. About 2 o'clock at night one or more persons went to the residence of David Woodward and when he appeared at the door in answer to their call, he was struck in the face with an ax and instantly killed. The m er of the murdered man, so that they died, and also severely stabbed his mother, from the effects of which she never recovered, though she lived several years".
William Sanders was arrested, charged with the crime, and waiving examination was sent to jail until his trial came off at Bedford on a change of venue. The jury hung, and the prisoner was discharged on bail, and soon disappeared. The crime was never solved.
