Mary Nealous Reading, age 83, of Prairie Village, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, September 17, 2002, at Menorah Medical Center. Mass of Christian burial will be 10 a.m. Thursday, September 19, at St. Ann's Catholic Church, 7241 Mission Road. Burial in Resurrection Cemetery, Lenexa, Kansas.

Mary was born April 16, 1919, in Kansas City, Kansas. She attended St. Francis Seraph grade school and St. Agnes Academy High School. Mary went to Kansas City Junior College and graduated from the University of Kansas City with a B.S. degree in Chemistry. Mrs. Reading was a chemist and, during World War II, was hired by the Phillips Petroleum Company as their first female chemist. Mary worked with ceramics, painted and was quite an accomplished artist and photographer. She was an avid bird watcher and in fact, her backyard was a certified wildlife habitat. She was a devout Catholic and was a member of St. Ann's parish. Mary was a volunteer Camp Fire leader for her daughters and held several volunteer jobs for the Camp Fire Girls on district committees and Council Board of Directors. She won several national awards from the Camp Fire Girls including the Gulic Award, the highest award given. She was an active volunteer for the American Red Cross as an instructor in First Aid, CPR and Water Safety instructor certification at the age of 55 and giving swim lessons to children and adults. Mary also served on the YWCA branch executive committee. She was preceded in death by Leo, her husband of 51 years and a daughter, Teresa. Survivors include [three sons, a daughter, a grandson] and her dog Ivan the Terrible.
