John was "found dead in a clump of woods near Bardwell," beaten to death with a Hackberry club. John had left his house earlier that morning with $105; his pockets had been turned inside out and the money missing. The club that had been used to break his neck and crush his skull was lying near the body, which had also "been pierced by a sharp instrument." A negro, Steve Greer, was later arrested for John's murder.
An appeal, which trial occurred in January 1898, was denied. Greer's original sentence of 2nd degree murder and sentence of 25 years in the state penitentiary was upheld.

A precious one from us is gone,
A voice we love is stilled,
A place is vacant in our home,
Which never can be filled.
God in his wisdom has recalled,
The boon his love had given;
And though the body slumbers now,
The soul is safe in heaven.
