Daughter of William James Poitevent (1814-1890) and Mary Amelia Russ Poitevent (1819-1873). Married Russell Smith and had one child, a son, Earl Smith Poitevent. Apparently Russell Smith died when the boy was young (or perhaps before his birth) and Virginia took back her maiden name "Poitevent" and called her son "Russell Smith Poitevent.

This grave, originally in Gainesville Baptist Church Cemetery, Hancock County, Mississippi, was relocated and the remains reinterred in the early 1960's due to construction of the Mississippi Rocket Test Facility, now John C. Stennis Space and Technology Center.
