Reggie Cabral, local legend, dies at 72
Provincetown native and legend Reginald Warren Cabral, 72, a nationally-known art and book collector, philanthropist, historian and bar-owner, died August 19 of a heart attack in his home.A short man with white hair and a bushy white beard reminiscent of Santa Claus with a fondness for cigars instead of pipes, Cabral amassed an immense private collection of art and literature. Along with a penchant for collecting works from such prominent artists as Franz Kline and writers as Susan Glaspell, he was an avid amateur historian who gathered artifacts that represented the many facets of his hometown. Many of the works Cabral had obtained were gained from his desire to help young artists and writers, accepting photos and paintings in lieu of money. The visual works were often displayed at Cabral's bar, The Atlantic House, where famous writers and artists gathered in the past and gay men flock in the present. It was his philanthropic manner, combined with a child-like fascination to learn and his ebullient personality that etched his persona into the minds of those he encountered.Cabral was born to Portuguese fisherman Captain William Cabral and Mary Taves Cabral on October 12, 1923. His birth in Provincetown in the mid-1920s poised him to become completely immersed in the artistic wealth the community had to offer. He served in the Navy after high school, graduating from PHS in his naval uniform. He was stationed in the South Pacific aboard the mine-sweeper Henry S. Bauer during World War II.Cabral's return to Provincetown was marked with the purchase of The Atlantic House on Masonic Place, which he bought with sister, Halcyon, and brother-in-law, Frank Hurst. Many local groups benefited from Cabral's benevolence. The Provincetown AIDS Support Group, Foley House, the Fire and Rescue Squad, the Provincetown Harbor Swim For Life and many others held fund-raisers for which Cabral offered money, space or both.
