Furman Davis, 88, long-term resident of Center, Texas, passed away on Sunday, April 25, 2010, at his daughter's home in Georgetown, Texas.
Furman Davis was born and raised in Center, Texas, the youngest son of John and Jessie Davis. Furman married Mary Jo Matthews in Center, Texas in 1946. Mary Jo passed away in 1996 after 50 years of marriage. Furman is survived by his four loving children Dianna Davis Forest, Brenda Davis Fye, Victor Furman Davis and David Matthews Davis. He is also survived by sons-in-law Duncan Forest and Jerry Fye and daughter-in-law DeDe Davis. Furman will also be missed by his 5 grandchildren, Kristin Heath, Kyle Alston, Dianna Boorman, Allison Davis and Nathan Davis, as well as 6 great grandchildren, 2 nephews and a niece and numerous cousins and long-time friends. He will be especially missed by his close friend Mildred Bradberry.
Furman's first career was in service to his country in the Texas National Guard, the United States Army and the United States Air Force from November 1938 until he retired in January 1972. Furman began his Army service in Texas Company D 144th Infantry. He served domestically at Ft. Lewis, Washington and Wilmington, North Carolina, patrolling coastal and inland waterways. He then served in Oran, French Morocco and Naples, Italy. He joined a heavy weapons company in Anzio, Italy for a campaign to capture Rome. From Rome he went back to Naples to train for the invasion of Southern France. On August 15, 1944 he participated in an assault landing invasion of Southern France and subsequent campaigns through France to the German border. He was wounded in action and received numerous decorations and awards for his service and bravery including a Bronze Star, a Purple Heart and numerous campaign medals. Furman returned to the United States in October 1945.
After the war Furman was discharged from the Army and enlisted in the Air Force. His assignments included Carlwell AFB, Barksdale AFB, Reese AFB, 3 years in Japan, Edwards AFB, RAF Bentwater, Ipswich, England, Amarillo AFB and Lackland AFB. He served with the Air Security Police in various capacities including Security Operations Supervisor, Corrections Security Operations Superintendent and Security Police Training Superintendent. Chief Master Sergeant Furman Davis consistently received outstanding reviews from his commanding officers and was several times rated as the "best Chief Master Sergeant in the whole United States Air Force". Furman returned with his family to Center, Texas in 1972, where he completed a long second career as an Investigator for the Shelby Count District Attorney. Furman was a member of the First Baptist Church of Center, Texas and the Center Country Club. Furman's interests included golf, ranching, gardening and carving.
Furman will be buried alongside his loving wife, Mary Jo, at the Newburn Cemetery in Center, Texas. A memorial service will be held for family and friends at The First Baptist Church in Center, Texas on Saturday, May 1, 2010 at 2 PM. Visitation will be from 1 PM till service time at the First Baptist Church.
