Their home in New Mexico was a dugout under the ground. Zelma and Paul would haul water in a barrel on the cart from a neighbor's well. They also gathered cow chips to burn for fuel. It was a hard life and far from ideal. In 1916 her brother, John, Jr. was born. By 1920 the family had moved back to Lewis.
Zelma's parents divorced in 1923. She moved with her mother to Hutchinson, Kansas where she graduated from high school in 1929. She married Bode Hebrlee in 1933. They were the parents of two daughters. When she and Bode divorced in 1946 she and her daughters moved to California to be near her mother.
She married Ted Lott in 1948 and they moved to Glendora, CA. It was after she and Ted were married that they took up bowling, and they both took organ lessons. They were married for 41 years until Ted died in 1989.
Zelma had many interests. She enjoyed playing the violin and organ. She was an accomplished seamstress. Over the years she had done oil painting, made pottery, ceramic and porcelain dolls. In her later years she spent thousands of hours making beautiful large framed cross-stitched angel pieces for her family.
