Mr. Donald P. Sumner, 85, of New Ellenton, SC died Saturday, April 24, 2010 at his residence. Funeral services will be held at George Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 211 Park Ave. SW, Aiken at 1pm on Thursday, April 29, 2010. Interment will follow at St. Paul United Methodist Church Cemetery.

He was born in Duncan, SC, on December 15, 1924 and was a son of Charles Flay Sumner and Dorothy Roberts Sumner. He spent his younger years in Forest City, NC. He retired from E.I. DuPont at the Savannah River Site. He was a member of St. Paul Methodist Church, New Ellenton.
Mr. Sumner graduated cum laude from the University of South Carolina at the age of 72. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and had a passion for education. He also enjoyed traveling, touring Scotland, England, France and most of Europe. He also visited India and Africa. He was married to Linda Baker Sumner in Hawaii in 2001.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother Charles Flay Sumner, his first wife Dorothy Goode Sumner and step-daughter Kathy L. Baker.
Mr. Sumner is survived by his wife, Linda Huffman Sumner, Aiken, two daughters; Donna S. Alexander (Kenneth), North Augusta and Jessica N. Thompson, Aiken, step-children, Dan B. Baker, (Joyce), Rock Hill, Eric E. Baker, (Polly), Rock Hill, brother; Eugene Sumner, San Diego, CA, grandchildren; Kenneth G. Alexander Jr. (Shannon), North Augusta, Melissa A. Simmons (Jon), Jesup, GA, Sonya A. Reimann (Frank), Aiken, Tripp N. Nobles (Michelle), Augusta, Christopher D. Nobles (Sheree), Augusta, Adam F. Nobles, Brunswick GA, Jessica Thompson, Aiken, Patrick Thompson, Aiken. He is also survived by nine great grandchildren, Brooke, Tyler, Triston, Preston, Arden, Zachary. Gavin, Abbey, Beth, Sara Reid and many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Foreman Memorial Baptist Christian Life Center.
