He played for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1905 until being purchased by Rochester (Eastern League) on July 22. He played 4 seasons there and 11 total in the minor leagues. He also managed in the minors.

He played with Honus Wagner and his children had fond memories of Honus' visits to their home. William married Helen (Nellie) Patterson on April 12, 1914. They had 5 children: Velma, William (buried near him), Clayton (James), John and Katherine (Corinne). He was employed as a buffer for the Oneida County Deputy Sheriff's Office.
