Thomas first served as a Private in Captain William S. Devane's Independent Company, North Carolina Troops. He was transferred to Company A (Sampson Confederates), 61st North Carolina Infantry on or about September 5, 1862. He was reported on detached duty with the Signal Corps in the Cape Fear District from July 27, 1862 through April 30, 1864. He was on duty as a telegraph operator during part of that period and as signals officer on the steamer Eugene during part of that period. He rejoined the company on October 19, 1864. No further records.
