D'Agostino was a graduate of new Hartford High School where he was on the yearbook staff and the basketball and wrestling teams. He left Hamilton College to enlist in the Army Air Corps.

1st Lt D'Agostino was the pilot of A-20B Havoc #41-3409, assigned to the 12th Air Force, 47th Bombardment Group, 84th Bombardment Squadron. On July 3 1943 they were on a mission to bomb an airdrome at Sciacca Sicily, it was his 35th combat mission. Over the target they were hit by anti-aircraft fire, the plane burst into flames and crashed two miles south of Sciacca in a heavily wooded area. The plane's two gunner were killed, but D'Agostino was able to parachute to safety. He was captured and became a POW until his prison camp was liberated at the end of the war.

He married, became a home builder and had three children.
