He married Esther Annie Doak about 1838 in Bedford County, Tennessee and by 1846 he moved his family to Lamar County Texas. Of the 5 children, his oldest, Samuel was born in Tennessee and the rest were born in Lamar County, Texas.
Just after the 1850 Census his wife Esther died and Hop's remarried in 1854 to Caroline Moore of Lamar County, Texas. They had no issue. She died in 1858. Hop's never remarried. In 1873 he went on a hunting expedition in Missouri and was the victim of accidental shooting by his son-in-law, William T. Perry, his deceased daughter Leticia's Husband.
