Walter S. Ward, 75, former Bond Co. treasurer & former member of the Greenville City Council & well known resident, died at Utlaut Memorial hospital at 3:40 p.m., Wednesday, where he had been a patient on a number of occasions, following an extended illness from August last year.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m., Saturday at the First Christian church, the Rev. Frank Bush officiating. Interment will be in Mt. Gilead cemetery, west of Greenville. Friends may call at the Donnell Funeral Home after 7 p.m. today. Masonic (can't read) will be conducted at the funeral home at 8 p.m., Friday by Greenville Lodge No. 245 A.F.&A.M.
Walter Scott Ward was the son of William C. & Mary (Hunter) Ward & he was born west of Greenville in the Shawnee community, 26Apr1888, being aged 75 years, 2 months & 14 days. When he was about 4 years old the family moved to Greenville & he had made this city his home since. He was married 03Jul1909 to Lottie J. Minor in Vandalia & they made their home in Greenville & prior to her death, 26May1958, they lived on a farm northeast of Smithboro. Surviving are 3 daughters, Helen, Mrs. Kenneth Finger of Detroit, MI; Thelma, Mrs. Walter Haller of Bethalto; & Shirley, Mrs. David Taylor of Norman, OK; & 2 sons, Walter Ward, Jr., of Norman, OK; & William C. Ward of Fairbanks, AK; 13 grandchildren & 4 great-grandchildren; & 1 sister, Miss Florence Ward of this city, with whom he had made his home for the past several months. Five sisters, Anne, Cordia, Golen, Orah & 1 sister who died in infancy, have preceded him in death.
Mr. Ward was a member of the First Christian church of this city, was a member of Greenville Lodge No. 245 A.F.&A.M., which lodge he had served twice as worshipful master, being active for many years in the degree work; a member of Greenville Chapter No. 748 O.E.S., being a past patron of that order. For many years he operated a sheet metal & furnace business in Greenville. He was a former member of the Greenville Fire Department, served 2 terms on the city council & 1 term as Co. treasurer, 1955-58. He was a man of pleasant personality & this trait made for him a large friendship. As a youth he learned the tinner's & furnace trade under the late Sam W. Wallace.
