Robert Lee Bates, Jr., 54, of Vernon, Ohio, died at his residence on January 30, 2006, with his family by his side. Formerly of Ashtabula County, he was born on August 18, 1951 in Greenville, Pennsylvania to Robert L. Bates, Sr. and Marian G. (Youngblood) Bates. Mr. Bates was a 1969 graduate of Jamestown High School. He served in the United States Army from 1971 to 1973. Mr. Bates operated a dairy farm for over 25 years. He enjoyed going to yard sales, flea markets and auctions, collecting old milk bottles, antiques and spending time with his grandchildren. Mr. Bates is preceded in death by his father. Survivors include a daughter Maria C. Good of Somerset, Penn.; sons, Robert W. Millard of Pierpont, Ohio; Clayton H. Bates of Somerset, Penn.; Benjamin L. Bates of Williamsfield, Ohio; his mother Marian G. Furness of Greenville, Penn.; sisters, Janet E. Solomon of Lordstown, Ohio; Carol A. Karr of Vernon, Ohio; Donna J. Scott of Greenville, Penn., Lois J. Bates of Lordstown, Ohio; Mary S. Berrier of Pulaski, Penn.; brothers James G. Bates of Sandy Lake, Penn.; Ralph A. Bates of Jamestown, Penn., and six grandchildren.

A memorial service was held on February 4, 2006 at Baumgardner Funeral Home in Kinsman, Ohio. A private burial of cremated remains was held in August 2006 at Kinsman Cemetery.
