William Frederick Oswalt and Ida Elsie Miller Oswalt were married on April 28, 1906. They had seven children: Berta Elmer Oswalt, Edith Amanda Oswalt, Clyde Franklin Oswalt, Mary Irene Oswalt, Paul Wilber Oswalt, Helen Catherine Oswalt and Edward Lavere Oswalt.

Fred's parents were William Oswalt (1830-1901) and Pauline Ensley Oswalt (1857-1931). He had four siblings: Earl Earnest (spouse Bessie Inez Snow), Mary Mae (spouse Fred Perry), Bert Adolph (spouse Clara Mae Odell), and Wayne A.Oswalt.

Fred played violin and trumpet. He led 2 bands. Of evenings, usually on Saturday night the neighbors would come to the Oswalt house to hear Fred play his violin accompanied by guitars and banjo by some of the Oswalt sons. One of his favorite songs was "Turkey in the Straw."

The William Fred and Ida Oswalt family were hard-working farmers and active members of Chester Center Christian Church.
