John Neil Johnston, 79, was a pioneer educator and former Floydada school superintendent. He died at his home on West Missouri Street. Services were held in the Floydada First Methodist Church officiated by Rev. Gordon G. Voight, pastor of the First Christian Church, assisted by Rev. W.P. Jennings of Plainview, and Rev. N.E. Tyler of Floydada. Interment was made in the Graham cemetery where he had formerly been superintendent of schools. Masonic rites were held at the graveside. Mr. Johnston moved to Texas early in life where he followed in the footsteps of other relatives by becoming interested in education, serving for over 50 years in various schools of Texas. From 1922-1924, he served as superintendent of the Floydada schools, retiring in 1924 to enter private business in Floydada. He never lost his touch with education, he was the author of a text book used in public schools dealing with the history of government and was writing on a civics book at the time of his death. For the past several years he had been working on a history, or genealogy of the Johnston family which he recently completed after a great deal of research and labor. Before moving to Floydada, he was at various times superintendent of schools at Graham and Newcastle. He was a life member of the Masonic Lodge and an honorary elder of the First Christian Church at the time of his death.

Survived by his children - Mrs. George Mayes, Mrs. R.T. Williams, Mrs. E.B. Buster, Mrs. D.F. Blatherwich, A.S. Johnson, J.N. Johnston, Jr, Ben S. Johnson; brothers - A.S. Johnston, Joseph N. Johnston; grandchildren were present for the funeral.
