Thomas Crutcher Baker was the second of six children born to William C. Baker (1823-1903) and Sarah Elizabeth Denton (1826-1894). His mother, Sarah, was the daughter of John B. Denton (1806-1841) for whom Denton County and the city of Denton are named. Sarah's first marriage was to Bernard Hill, and they had one son, Wilbur Fiske Hill (1844-1905). After Bernard Hill died in May 1848, Sarah married William C. Baker (1823-1903). Their six children were Virginia Susannah Baker Wilburn (1850-1942), Thomas Crutcher Baker (1853-1925), Catherine "Kate" Baker Shearer(1859-1896),James William Baker (1864-1939), Martha Elizabeth Baker Walker (1866?-?) and Minnie S. Baker Carter (1869-1910).

Thomas Baker was a farmer in Fannin County, Texas. His first wife was Susan Permelia Herndon (about 1856-about 1887). Thomas and Susan were married December 15, 1881 in Fannin County, Texas. Thomas and Susan had two daughters, Beulah (1882 - ?) and Nora Kate Baker Hapke (1885-1971). After Susan's death in childbirth, Thomas kept Beulah but he sent Nora to be raised by her aunt in Kansas. Nora's aunt was Mattie Herndon Pearcy (1846-1919).

Thomas remarried a widow, Mary Bina Briley Harden (1866-1914), who had one son, Charles Lanius Harden (1887-1958). Thomas and Bina had six children together. They were Mary Elizabeth "Bessie" Baker Swafford (1894-1971), Katherine "Kate" Baker(1895-1906), Eno R Baker Allen Caldwell (1897-1989), Thomas Waits Baker (1899-1962), Susan Ellen Baker Richie (1900-1986) and William Coleman "Bill" Baker (1904-1982).
