He and his brother John, with Rev Abraham Buckles chosen as the minister, helped organize the Regular Predestinarian Baptist Church in 1836 as the Mississinewa Missionary Baptist Church . They met in homes in Center township, Granville area in Muncie, Delaware Co, IN.

James was also sheriff in Delaware in Muncie, IN in 1836.

James was the 8th of 9 children born to Rev Patriot Joshua Howel (Sr) 1745-1836 also buried in Collins Cemetery. Joshua (Sr) and Mary's children were all born in VA were as follows:

Abigail - 1770
Nancy - 1777
Joshua (Jr) - 1779
Thomas - 1780
Daniel - 1781
John - 1783
James - 1787
Jeremiah - 1793

Joshua and Mary with John, James and Jeremiah arrived in Delaware County from 1834-1835. James settled in Center twp while the others were in Mt Pleasant twp. David, Abigail, and Nancy are buried in VA. Joshua (Jr) is buried in MI. Thomas burial location is uncertain. Daniel is buried in OH. John and Jeremiah are buried in Wabash Co.
