Adele was born in Windsor Mills, Richmond, Quebec, into a family of nine children. Her parents were born in Richmond, Quebec, where they met and married about 1870. Charles Anson Miller's parents were from County Longford, Ireland, and Clara Lilian Gardner's from England. Charles was an insurance agent.

After teaching for three years in Napierville, Adele had to give up her position about 1900 and return home due to the failing health of her mother. Adele essentially raised her four younger siblings - Minnie, Ruth, Clara and Raymond.

Adele was a gifted artist who had several of her oil paintings displayed at the 1931-33 Montreal Art Association Exhibits. She is listed in the Canadian Women Artists History Initiative.

She didn't drive until she was past 50 but then, much to the amazement of her family, drove from New York City to Boston to Buffalo to study with four different teachers.

Her father, Charles Anson Miller, ran a very proper Victorian household and as a young person Adele was only allowed to paint in dark muted colours. During the 1920s she visited her cousin, artist Adele Miller, in Gloucester, Massachusetts. There she took a course in landscape painting and said it was exciting to be encouraged to use such bright colours!

Adele was born on 18 November but the minister of Brompton-Windsor Church of England mistakenly entered 6 November on the baptismal record. This became her legal birthdate on the Social Security records in the States.
