James Franklin Ackerman, 65, was remembered at funeral services held April 16 at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel in Jefferson. Rev. Jack Pugh officiated. Burial followed with military honors in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens in Jefferson.

Mr. Ackerman was born in Rochester, N.Y. to Clarence and Marjorie Waddell Ackerman. He was a retired first sergeant from the U.S. Army with over 23 years of service, serving both in Korea and Vietnam Campaigns. He was a member of the American Legion, Disabled American Veterans and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia Taylor Ackerman; three sons, Mark Ackerman, Laurel Springs, Dale Pennington, West Jefferson, and James Ackerman Jr., Wilkesboro; two daughters, Barbara Sample, Jefferson, and Wanda Parsons, Crumpler; two brothers, Richard Ackerman, Denver, Colo., and John Ackerman, Newport News, Va.; three sisters, Betty Dean and Judy Rorrer, both of Charlottesville, Va., and Peggy Childres, Maryland; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
