Anna (Puffer) Beranek's parents, Thomas and Anna (Rinda)Puffer, came to Dakota Territory from Prague, Czechoslavakia in 1883, settling first in Tabor, Bon Homme County. Her father worked as a carpenter for five years in Tabor, before moving to Hand County, South Dakota in 1888, living there several years before filing for a homestead in Como Township.

The Puffer's neighbors during the early years included other Bohemian families, including Matej Koc, Simon Miller and Frank Beranek.

The Puffer family originally lived in a small shanty, shared by Thomas, Anna, their seven children, and Anna's parents, Paul and Anna (__) Rinda. After seven years of living in this shanty, they were able to build a fine T-frame home.

On January 7, 1905, daughter, Anna (Puffer) married James Beranek, son of Frank and Rosalie (Skala) Beranek. They too, made their home in Como Township. James and Anna raised two children, Joe and Bessie, who, in later years each married and lived near their parents.

James and Anna built a small home, but over the years, they were able to add more rooms, as well as build a barn. They lived there until 1962, when they left the farm and moved to the Prairie Center Home in Miller. They celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary there on Jan 7, 1963.
