Ella E. Grossell

June 3, 1912 - July 25, 2006

FOUNTAIN CITY, Wis. - Ella E. Grossell, 94, of Fountain City passed away peacefully in her sleep Tuesday, July 25, 2006, at St. Michael's Lutheran Home in Fountain City.

She was born June 3, 1912, in the town of Milton, Fountain City, to Frederick W. and Emma (Schaffner) Mueller. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Michael's Ev. Lutheran Church. On Oct. 29, 1930, she married Helmer Grossell in Ella's parents home, in the town of Milton. To this union they had four children.

Ella was a very good gardener. She loved her flowers inside and outside. For her 90th birthday, she had a maple tree planted out in front of her apartment at Buffalo County Housing in Cochrane, Wis., where she made her home from November 2000 until she entered St. Michael's Nursing Home in August 2005.

She did all kinds of crafts. Ella knitted heavy sweater jackets and afghans for each of us. She also made each a hand-stitched pieced quilt. She did crewel work, counted cross stitch, plastic canvas, etc.

Ella was a superb cook and baker. She made the best tasting rhubarb upside-down cake, that just melted in your mouth. She was a cook and head cook a few years at St. Michael's Nursing Home before her retirement. Allen, her son-in-law, said he never had any food to eat that wasn't top notch. She believed in a strict balanced diet. When we cleaned her freezer out, she had whole meals all bagged up (home made) to just pop in the microwave.

She was a Packers fan and Dad a Vikings fan. She loved to go trout fishing and tried to get a bigger trout than Dad.

Ella was a very religious person. She sang in the choir, was a past Sunday school teacher, and was the superintendent of the Sunday school for years.

Ella is survived by a daughter, Marjorie (Allen) Kreher of Fountain City; 17 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Alma Putz of Cochrane; a brother, Arthur Mueller of Winona; a brother-in-law, Donald (Catherine) Grossell of Cochrane; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She's also survived by special friends Bev and Jerry Thaldof, Bruce and Jackie McFarland, Ellen Appel and Louise Bauer.

Ella was preceded in death by her parents; husband Helmer on Dec. 23, 1998; three children: Della, November 1986, Delbert, December 1994 and Geneva, June 2001; three sisters and two brothers.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, July 28, at St. Michael's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Fountain City, with the Rev. Elroy V. Conradt officiating. Interment will be at Fountain City Public Cemetery, Fountain City.

Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Friday at the church.

"You are finally free of all your pain, dear Mother. Rest in peace. We will miss you and our morning talks from 5:30 to 6 a.m. for over 15 years. Then time to take our daily pills."

Words of sympathy or remembrance may be left at the funeral home website.

Services are entrusted to Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Fountain City.
