SYRACUSE JOURNAL DEMOCRAT
Syracuse, Otoe, Nebraska
Friday, August 21, 1885

IN MEMORIAM
DIED at her residence in this (Otoe, NE) county on the 14th inst. at 8 o'clock am, Mrs Agnes Dunkle, of pulmonary consumption, after a lingering illness of four months duration.

The subject of this memoir was born near the village of York, Haldimand county, (Ontario) Canada, 1850, where in after-years she qualified herself as a common school teacher and followed this vocation in her native state [province] for 7 years. In the spring of 1874 she came to Page county Iowa, whither three brothers had proceeded her and located their houses.

For about a year she made her home with her brother Thomas, and in the year of 1875 was married to Mr Nelson Dunkle, and shortly afterwards became a member of the Presbyterian church under the ministrations of Rev Keer of College Springs Iowa. Two years ago they sold their little farm in Iowa and bought a larger one on the prairie in this county (Otoe, NE) and moved to it and began to improve it in a substantial way.

Settling down in their new home at the end of the first summer in Nebraska she united with the Hopewell church, although the distance from it deprived her to some extent the regular attendance at all times upon gospel ordinances, yet she manifested by her exemplary deportment that her all-absorbing interest was there. Having had a large experience in dealing with the various human natures, well she knew how to gain the best respect of all. Her amiable traits will long survive in the memory of those who knew her.

She was the sixth of a family of eleven [living] children, three of whom have passed over the river. She leaves a kind husband and four children, the oldest of three boys about 10 years, the youngest a daughter eight months old, thus making an aching void in the family circle. One brother here, two in Iowa and the remainder of the family including the aged parents of 68 years in the far-off homestead in Canada to mourn her loss. The consolation left us is the hope of a blessed immortality beyond the grave.
