Alfred was a farmer in Saskatchewan, Canada. He married Mary Ellen O'Shea, a school teacher. The eldest and youngest of their 4 children were born in Canada. When Mary Ellen was close to giving birth she would travel to Minnesota where, at that time, the medical care was better for newborns and their mothers, and she felt it was safer. As she was a new mother she was unable to get to Minnesota in time to give birth to Alfred, Jr., and Jerry arrived too quickly in order for him to be delivered in Minnesota, so both children,were born in Canada, and the middle children, Dennis and Mary Ellen were born in Minnesota. When their youngest of their 4 childen, Jerry McLachlan, was of school age, they moved to Minnesota so that all the children could receive the finest education available.
