Katherine (Kate) A Gleason was born on November 25, 1865. Her father owned a machine tool company known as Gleason Works. Kate started to work for her father's company when she was 12. Kate worked as a treasurer and saleswoman for the company. Kate was accepted and began to attend Cornell's School of Mechanic Arts. She was called home to help her father because of a financial crisis. Kate wrote, "My heart broke utterly. I took Father's letter out on the campus and sat under a tree... and wept and wept. I had planned to finish the engineering course. I was the only woman and it meant so much." Four years later, she returned as a special student.
Since her mother was a friend of Susan B Anthony, Gleason became a supporter of women's suffrage.
Kate Gleason was a successful businesswoman and was recognized for her knowledge in the field of engineering.
In 1914, she was the first woman elected to full membership in the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. In 1918, she was appointed the president of the First National Bank of Rochester. After World War I, she rebuilt a castle in France and helped surrounding towns to rebuild after the war I. Kate worked on a project in Sausalito, California, but that project had problems and was not as successful as one that she had done in Rochester.
Katherine (Kate) Gleason died on January 9.1933. She left much of her fortune to institutions in Rochester
