ABINGDON - Kenneth Nick Stuart, 93, a resident of Care Center of Abingdon, died at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, April 22, 2010, at the care center.
Ken was born March 11, 1917, in Fenton, the son of Nicholas and Clara (Bos) Stuart. He married Signe Johnson on June 10, 1940, in Peoria. She preceded him in death in March 1988.
He is survived by two sons, Darwin Gale (and Sue) Stuart of Skokie and Gerald Lee (and Magie) Stuart of Abingdon; one sister, Evelyn Wilkins of Prophetstown; three grandchildren, Alan David (and Beth) Stuart of Winnetka, Laura Ann Stuart of Milwaukee, and Allison Kerri Stuart of Brooklyn, N.Y.; two great-grandchildren, Charlie Jane Stuart, 3 and Roslyn Stuart, 5 months.
He graduated from Morrison High School in 1935. He had lived in Morrison, Peoria, Grand Rapids, Minn., and in Buhl, Minn., with his wife's widowed sister, Bertha Heikkila, for 10 years prior to moving to Abingdon. In Abingdon, he became a resident at the Care Center of Abingdon. Ken's family wishes to express their appreciation for the wonderful love and care provided to Ken during his stay there.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He worked for Caterpillar Inc. in Peoria for 35 years, retiring from the Human Resources Department. He was a member of Buhl Lutheran Church. His involvements included the 55 Alive Driving Program and serving on the YMCA Board in Grand Rapids, Minn. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing throughout his lifetime.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday, April 26, at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel. Mrs. Eleanor Landon will officiate. Entombment will be in the American Mausoleum in Peoria. Visitation will be one hour before the service Monday at the chapel.
In lieu of flowers, the family wishes donations be made to Abingdon School District Care Center Visit Fund (to help fund projects the students bring to care center residents). Memorials can be given at the chapel or mailed to Abingdon School District, Care Center Visit Fund, 401 W. Latimer St., Abingdon, IL 61410 or to the Buhl Lutheran Church, Buhl, MN 55713.
