Edward Maynard, 86, died at his home in Dresbach, Minnesota on Monday April 29, 1941 at 11:45 pm after an illness of four weeks. He was born on May 7, 1854 in Dubuque, Iowa to John and Emily (Verdon) Maynard. In that same year the family came to Dresbach when Edward was three months old. Edward had lived in Dresbach since, with the exception of three years in which he had lived in North Dakota. Edward’s grandfather, Joseph Menard, was head of the French colony that settled in what is known today as Dresbach. The Maynard family landed on Maynard’s Landing which it was known as before Dresbach. Edward’s father had built a small cabin on the banks of the river before they had arrived. They had lived there several years until his father built a cabin in the central part of town. Edward received his education at the local school and also at Columbus, Iowa where he was taught by priest who did most of the teaching in those days.

On November 4, 1882 Edward married Ida Doughty in LaCrosse, Wisconsin. They had four sons and one daughter. Louis “Edward Jr.” was in business in Charleston, W. Va., Lloyd in Wilton, ND., Richard in Dresbach, Myron at home, and Violet (Shippee) in New York City. As a young man Edward worked as a cook on a Mississippi River rafting crew, as a logger, and later as a mate on the steamer Silas Wright. For many years Edward worked as a carpenter in Dresbach. Later, during his retirement, he worked as a truck gardener selling produce from his garden and a large strawberry patch.

He was preceded in death by John and Emily (Verdon) Maynard, his father and mother, and Joseph and Catherine (Roy) Menard, his grandfather and grandmother, brothers Joseph and John, and sister Sophia Curns. He was survived by his wife, children, eight grand children, one great grandchild and his sister, Mrs. Laurence (Adeline) Keenan of LaCrosse. Funeral services were conducted at his home with a minister from LaCrosse officiating. He was buried in the family cemetery (Menard Cemetery) which was on the hill overlooking the Maynard home.
