Caleb Gates (Joshua 3, Thomas 2, George 1), was born February 9, 1749/50 in East Haddam, CT baptized, June 10 1750, married, first, in Westchester, October 17, 1775, Esther Foote, born in Westchester, April 13, 1748, daughter of Nathaniel and Patience (Gates) Foote. Esther Foote joined the First Church, June 9, 1776, from the Second Church in Colchester. She died in East Haddam, October 11, 1799 of tuberculosis, after an illness of eight years, aged 52. He married, second, December 4, 1800, Elizabeth Percival, born July 19, 1755. She joined the First Church of East Haddam, January 4, 1801.
Caleb Gates marched for the relief of Boston in the Lexington Alarm, April 1775, and was a corporal on the roll of Captain Eliphalet Holmes Company of Minute-Men which was raised in May 1776.
His grave is listed in Abstracts of Graves of Revolutionary Patriots by Patricia Law Hatcher. He was elected deacon of the First Church in 1795. He also commanded a military company. He died, February 9, 1822 in East Haddam, "in a fit" (probably epilepsy) and was buried at the First Church Cemetery. His widow married, second, July 30, 1826, Matthew Smith, Esq., and removed to Middlefield, Hampshire County, MA.

He taught school winters and farmed in the summers. In religious matters, he was considered a "free thinker", and while he always attended services on the Sabbath, he was not a member of the church. After his brother Russell died, he raised his two children, Caleb Foote Gates and Esther Elizabeth Gates. He died in East Haddam 17 Mar 1862, age 86 and was buried in the First Church Cemetery.
