Sylvia H. Mertens, age 89, of Kiel, died Monday evening, April 12, 2010 at Willowdale Nursing and Rehab Center, New Holstein.
She was the former Sylvia Pohl, born May 1, 1920 in Pigeon Lake, daughter of the late Roland and Alma (Ruh) Pohl.
Sylvia attended Hulls Crossing Grade School and Glenbuelah High School.
On October 30, 1940 she married Jerome Mertens at St. John the Baptist Parsonage in Plymouth. He preceded her in death on July 30, 1998.
Sylvia was in business with her husband Jerry for 20 years. She also was a retail clerk, waitress and seamstress, retiring in 1982.
She was a life-long member of St. Peter's United Church of Christ, Kiel and a 50-year member of the Women's Guild of the church. She also was a volunteer at the Kiel nutrition site and a member of the Kiel Senior Club. Since 1984 she had been an R.S.V.P (Retired Senior Volunteer Program) member for Manitowoc County and was a former member of the Kiel Singing Seniors.
Sylvia's mother taught her to embroidery at the age of 7 and it became a lifetime hobby. She also enjoyed flower arranging, playing 31 and baking cupcakes for birthdays.
Survivors include her beloved Godchild, Mary Olm of Kiel; one brother, Wallace (Dottie) Pohl, Sparta; two sisters, Alice Noordyk, Plymouth, Elsie Schuricht, Menomonee Falls.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and her father- and mother-in-law.
Funeral services for Sylvia will be held Thursday, April 15, 2010 at St. Peter's United Church of Christ, Kiel with Rev. David Mercer officiating. Burial will take place in SS Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery, Kiel.~ I know not the way I'm going but I know my guide. With a child like faith I offer my hand to my mighty friend at my side. And the only thing I say to him as he takes it; "Hold it fast, suffer me not to loose the way and lead me home at last."~
