MILTON-FREEWATER - Hazel M. Stoolfire, 97, of Milton-Freewater died Sunday, April 18, 2010, at the Milton-Freewater Health and Rehabilitation Center in Milton-Freewater. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, April 23 in the Milton-Freewater Cemetery.

Mrs. Stoolfire was born June 28, 1912, in Elgin to Willis and Cynthia Colpitts Carlton. She lived with her family in Elgin for a time. She later moved to Tuttle, Idaho, where her parents owned and operated a diversified farm and she attended school. In 1931 she married Wallace Stoolfire in Tuttle and they lived there and in Hagerman, Idaho until moving to Walla Walla and finally to Milton-Freewater in 1941. She lived at their home for 62 years.

She worked as a cook, waitress, and dishwasher. The last restaurant she worked at was the M-F Supper Club, retiring in 1969. She also worked at Mojonnier Fruit Packing for a time. Mr. Stoolfire preceded her in death in 1972.

Mrs. Stoolfire is survived by sons Lyle Carlton of Ridgefield, Wash., Robert Wallace Stoolfire of Troy, Idaho, Willis "Lee" Stoolfire of Pendleton and George Stoolfire of Pilot Rock; daughters Lila Hudson and Rebecca Stoolfire, both of Milton-Freewater, Clara Ganoe of Mattawa, Wash., Eunice Wickert of Pendleton and Mary Ellen Stauter of Mustang, Okla.; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, great-great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, two grandchildren and a son-in-law.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriner's Hospital through the Munselle-Rhodes Funeral Home, 902 S. Main, Milton-Freewater, OR 97862.
