Artist H. Ben Aikin died Saturday (Jan. 25, 1992) in Valley Memorial Hospital, Livermore, Calif., of complications from Parkinson’s Disease. He was 81.
A native of Decatur, Aikin was born on May 28, 1910. During the late 1920s he worked in the poster shop at the Lincoln Theatre. Following World War II, he returned to Decatur and worked in the early 1950s in the art department of the Herald & Review. He studied at Millikin University, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Art Center School in Los Angeles, Calif. During World War II he served as an officer in the U.S. Coast Guard. From 1959 until his retirement in 1971, he worked as a technical illustrator at Sandia Laboratories in Livermore and his paintings and sculpture were exhibited in galleries in Northern California.
He is survived by his wife, Margery Duncan Aikin, also a native of Decatur, and a daughter, Marie, both of Livermore; son, Jim of Cupertino, Calif.; one granddaughter.
A memorial service was held at the Livermore Unitarian Church on Saturday, Feb. 1. Interment will be in Graceland Cemetery, Decatur.
