"Scottish Actor,director and commentator". He was well known from 1966 to 2008. with his voiceovers of the Edinburgh Military Tattoo. He commentated on such important events as Remembrance Day services and the royal wedding of Charles and Diana. In the 1950s he was a founding member of the Gateway Theatre in Edinburgh. In the early '60s he took on the production roles of Henry IV and Rob Roy. He played the leading role in Shakespeare 's Cymbeline in 1962. In the 1980s he directed the nascent Scottish Theatre Company. He received his education from Daniel Stewart's Collage. For more than 20 years, he was organist, lay preacher, secretary and reader at the Canonmills Baptist Church in Edinburgh. He was appointed OBE in 1980. He was awarded an honorary doctorate from Heriot-Watt University In 1984. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in 1986. After a long illness he died in St Columba's Hospice in Edinburgh
