Minnesota governor. 36th and 38th, and longest serving governor of Minnesota. Born in northern Minnesota to immigrant parents. Educated as a dentist. Elected to the Minnesota Senate and then as Lt. Governor in 1970. Became governor in 1977 when U.S. Senator Walter Mondale became Vice President and then Governor Wendell Anderson resigned as governor, agreeing ahead of time that Perpich would appoint him to Mondale's vacant Senate seat. Both Anderson and Perpich were turned out by the irate voters in 1978. After his successor's rough four years, Perpich ran again and was elected governor in 1982 and 1986. Defeated for another term in 1990. While derided by some as "governor goofy" for his far reaching ideas, some eventually became reality, including Minnesota's hosting of the Super Bowl in 1992 and the Mall of America which opened that same year.
