Wayne was born on February 5, 1927 in Converse, Louisiana, to Dalton and Eddie Mae Barnhill. He passed away on April 18, 2010 at St. Francis Medical Center after a short illness. He was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Monroe for 42 years where he served as an usher and faithful member of the Woodruff Sunday school Class. Wayne was also a member of the Western Star Lodge, Masonic Order; a member of the Louise L. McGuire Chapter 4, Monroe, La Order of the Eastern Star; and a Past Grand Patron of the State of Louisiana Grand Chapter.
Wayne was retired from business. Over his career he had engaged in multiple business opportunities finally retiring from the Wholesale Oil and Gas Business where he served as president of Barnhill Oil, Inc. In his retirement he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and most of all, being a servant to his friends and family.
Wayne was truly a member of this country's "Greatest Generation". He quit high school in 1945 to join the US Navy. He served aboard the USS Minneapolis as a Seaman 2nd Class and saw combat in the China Sea. He participated in the liberation of Korea at the end of the 2nd World War. Returning from his tour in the navy, Wayne re-enrolled in high school and graduated and went on to attend Business College.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Dalton and Ettie Mae Barnhill and his beloved wife of 63 years, Mattie Belle Barnhill.
He is survived by his son, Bennie Wayne Barnhill and wife, Cathy Barnhill; daughter Donna K. Cathey and husband, Stewart Cathey; 4 grandsons, Corey Barnhill, Brent Barnhill, Stewart Cathey, and Erich Cathey; his sister, Bernice Franks; and 2 sisters-in-law, Mildred Barnhill and Ola Mae Madrey.
Visitation will be at Kilpatrick Funeral Home on Lamy Lane in Monroe, LA on Thursday April 22, 2010 from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM.
