Professional Baseball Player. He was a professional baseball player from 1932 to 1945. He was a pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals, New York Giants, Boston Braves, Cincinnati Reds, Pittsburgh Pirates and the Chicago Cubs. After playing semi-pro ball in North Dakota, he finally got the opportunity to pitch with the big leagues as many players were drafted during World War II. Although he was in his mid-thirties by that time, he won 15 games in 1942 and made the National League All-Star team. He was in the major league for a short time, but sent back to the minor league for seven years. He considered leaving baseball early on, but stayed with the sport. Born the oldest of three sons of an oil drill worker, he once said after being recognized for his talents, "I think I could have been a winner up here since 1931 if they'd ever given me a chance." He retired at 40 and returned to his farm and raised chickens, hogs and hunting dogs.
