The son of Moses Pollard and Abigail Brown of Vermont, John served in the Civil War.

He enlisted on 02 May 1861 and was mustered in a week later as a private with Company B of the 1st Vermont Infantry. He was mustered out after three months service on 15 Aug 1861.

John reenlisted for a three-year stint on 12 Sep 1861 and was mustered in on 18 Oct 1861 as a private with Company I of the 2nd Vermont Infantry.

John was promoted to corporal on 26 Jan 1863. He was wounded in combat on 03 May 1863, but recovered and returned to duty. He was promoted to sergeant on 04 Aug 1864. He was mustered out on 18 Oct 1864.

John married Elizabeth "Nancy" Titus about 1871. They were the parents of 8 children.

John was a justice of the peace and worked as a realtor in St. Louis County, Missouri. He was a member of a fraternal organization known as the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR).

At the time of his death due to a cerebral hemorrhage, John was 89 years, 6 months and 5 days old. He was buried on 20 May 1930 and was survived by his wife. Nancy passed away in 1932.
