The son of John Cowan Atwood, Sr. and Georgie Tunstall Baker, William married Mary L. Foster on 06 Nov 1958 in Ferguson, St. Louis County, Missouri. They did not have any children.

William was a partner in the Atwood-Foster public relations firm in St. Louis. He and his wife, Mary, established the firm in 1959. They guided the political campaigns of Mayor Alfonso Juan "A.J." Cervantes.

William acted in television commercials and performed in various theatrical productions. He appeared at the St. Louis Muny Opera and at local dinner theaters.

He also worked as a freelance photographer.

William died of cancer at Barnes Hospital. At the time of his death, he was 71 years and 9 months old.

He was survived by 2 brothers, John C. Atwood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Harry B. Atwood of Pine Bluff, Arkansas; and 1 sister, Katherine M. Fiske of Kirkwood, Missouri.

In addition to his parents, William was preceded in death by his wife, Mary.

Funeral services were conducted at the Ferguson First Presbyterian Church in St. Louis County, Missouri on 11 Nov 1983.

William was buried next to his wife, Mary, who passed away in 1971 at the age of 38.
