Assella Darcus Castleberry was the daughter of William Martin Castleberry (1755-1836) & Elizabeth Smith (1765-1827). She was born in 1796 in Spartanburg, South Carolina and later moved to Caldwell, Kentucky as her family was seeking new homestead opportunities.

Assella Darcus Castleberry married Abraham Howton (1794-1840) on 16 March, 1812 in a double-in-law wedding in which her sister Elizabeth Castleberry married the brother of her husband, David Howton.

Assella Castleberry and Abraham Howton eventually settled in Fayette County, Alabama and are listed among the original patent holders of homestead land in the county. They would go on to have many children together.

The location of Assella Darcus Castleberry's resting place is unknown; however, her husband is buried in the Mount Pleasant Cemetary in Fayette, Alabama. Abraham Howton predeceased Assella by 42 years.
