Martha Isabella Witherspoon, only daughter of John Grier Witherspoon and the former Mary Haseltine Hawthorne, was born in at the home of her maternal grandparents in Due West, South Carolina; but grew up in the bounds of Cabarrus and Iredell Counties in North Carolina.

Martha's father, a captain in the North Carolina 30th Infantry, was mortally wound at the Battle of Kelly's Ford in Virginia on November 7th 1863. Leaving her mother to raise her and her younger brother, John Oliver.

At the age of 20, Martha married Thomas Dalton Miller, son of Thomas and Nancy [née Patterson] Miller. This union was blessed with the following known children:

Robert Oliver (1882-1967)
Mary Euphenia {m. Mann}(1886-1978)
William Clarke (1889-1973)
Lila (1892-1893)
Rebekah Isabelle {m. Cooper} (1894-1975)
Martha Haseltine {m. Nicholson}(1896-1989)
Florence Hawthorne {m. Deal}(1899-1991)

Mattie, as Martha was known and Thomas Miller made their home in Statesville, North Carolina; where Thomas was a successful merchant.

Martha Isabella Witherspoon Miller departed this life on the 22nd of October 1929 in the 70th year of her age.
