Guy P. Lewis, cashier of the Millikin national bank, died suddenly of heart trouble shorty after 3:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon. He was sitting at his desk in the bank, apparently in good health when he collapsed. Mr. Lewis had complained during the day of being ill. Advised to go home, he replied "I'm not built that way". Death found him where he had lived and in the way his friends think he would have preferred at his desk attending to business. His collapse came just at the completion of the tallying of the ballots in the annual election of officers and directors of the bank.

Paul Lewis, Mr. Lewis's eldest son was called from the collection department of the bank where he works, but Mr. Lewis was dead before Paul could reach his father's side. To R. J. Murphey, the last person outside the bank staff to talk to him, Mr. Lewis confided a few minutes before he died that he was suffering from endo-cardial rheumatism and stomach trouble. "I'm a sick man," he told Mr. Murphey but in a joking manner.

Word of Mr. Lewis's death spread through the business district in a few minutes. That Mrs. Lewis was apprehensive of her husband's condition all day Tuesday was revealed Wednesday. She had stopped in the bank two or three times during the day to see how he was feeling, friends said.

Dr. Will Wood, personal physician for the family, had warned Mrs. Lewis that her husband probably would die as he did because of the condition of his heart. Few of his friends knew the seriousness of his condition. His sister, Miss Mary Lewis, also had warned the family that death might be sudden. According to friends of the family, physicians had given Mr. Lewis only two years to live at the most.

Mr. Lewis entered the Millikin National bank in 1901 from the Peddicord & Burrows bank as exchange teller. He had started in Peddicord and Burrows bank in 1886 as messenger and clerk. In the Millikin National bank he gradually rose through receiving teller, paying teller and assistant cashier to cashier.

He was generally recognized as a keen businessman, specializing in credits and noted for his faculty for sizing up a customer. He devoted his life to his business and his family, seldom being seen in public gatherings and places. Besides his connection with the Millikin National bank, he had an interest in several other financial institutions in and near Decatur.

He was elected vice president of the Hardware State bank of Lovington in its organization meeting, Tuesday. He was a stockholder in the Mt. Zion State bank, the state bank of Niantic, and the state bank in Dalton City. He was also treasurer of Macon County fairgrounds, a member of the Decatur library board and a member of the board of trustees of the Masonic Temple association.

Mr. Lewis was born in Bloomington on Feb. 17, 1872, the son of Guy A. and Emma Wallace Lewis. He was the youngest of a family of six children, all of whom are dead but two sisters, Mrs. Laura Wood of Decatur and Miss Mary Lewis of Englewood, N. J.

The family moved to Decatur in 1877 and Mr. Lewis had lived here since. He married Miss Clara Bell Eaton of near Warrensburg on March 15, 1899. They had two children, Paul, employed in the collection department of the Millikin National bank, and Robert, attending Bradley Polytechnic institute, Peoria. The widow also survives him.

Mr. Lewis was a member of the First Presbyterian church and was prominently identified with Masonic orders. He was a member of Macon lodge no. 8, Macon chapter no. 21, Decatur Council no. 16 and Beaumanoir Commandery, Decatur and the Consistory and Shrine in Springfield. He was treasurer of each of the lodges to which he belonged in Decatur.

The Citizen's National bank and the National bank of Decatur will close Thursday at 2 pm on account of the funeral of Guy Lewis. Funeral services will be Thursday afternoon in the First Presbyterian church, conducted by Rev. E. W. Clippinger. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery.
