The decedent was a native of Saginaw, Mich. where he was born on January 18, 1852. He came to the city as a young man and for a time worked for his brother, C. M. Caldwell, the liveryman. He was also employed for a number of years in the Shellabarger mill. In 1877 he established himself in the coal business and was thus engaged up to the time of his death. He was the oldest retail coal dealer in the city and by reason of his personal popularity and attention the wants of his patrons had built himself up a fine trade.
Mr. Caldwell remained single until April 30, 1895 when he was married to Miss Alice Whithey at Maysville, Ky, who survives him. He also leaves three brothers, C. M. Caldwell of Decatur, Mary J. Caldwell of Erie Park, Ind, who with his wife is now in the city, and Freeley B. Caldwell of Chicago. Mrs. Bernard Bradley of this city was his only niece.
The funeral will be held Monday afternoon at 2:30 oclock from the residence on Prairie Ave and the services will be conducted by Rev. W. H. Penhallegon.
