Robert Sylvester Munger was the son of Henry Martin Munger of Mexia, Texas and Jane Catherine McNutt Munger. He attended Trinity College at Tecuacana, TX. and spent much time in his father's cotton gin and lumber mill. Mr. Munger conceived the idea for saving the health of the workers and invented "The Munger System" and his patents were used in the South as well as other parts of the world. This system won 10 gold medals at the Worlds Columbian Exposition in 1893. R. S. Munger was Vice Pres. of the Munger Improved Cotton Machine Mfg. Co. of Dallas, TX and was Vice Pres. of The Northington-Munger-Pratt Co. of Birmingham, director of both companies. Before leaving Texas for Alabama he gave land and money to Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX and was one of it's founders. In 1921 he was awarded the Birmingham News Loving Cup for his philanthropy. In 1902 Mr. Munger bought "Arlington", Ante-Bellum home in West End and restored it. His daughter Ruby Munger Montgomery and family lived there until she sold it to the City of Birmingham in 1953 and is now a museum.
